OHIO CRIME PREVENTION ASSOCIATION
2009 CRIME PREVENTION TRAININGS
CRIME PREVENTION THROUGH ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN
This Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) two-day training is designed to introduce the student to the CPTED concept. With an understanding of CPTED, an individual is better equipped to recognize, evaluate, and address problems which so often occur when we fail to properly consider issues such as the designated purpose of a space, the definition of that space, and the whether or not the design supports its intended function. CPTED applies to the selection of things as mundane as styles of fencing or landscaping, types of lighting and the intensity of the fixtures, to the total design, location and orientation of a development whether commercial or residential. In other words, we have an ability to create businesses, homes, subsidized housing, schools and even communities which are safer by design.
Focus will be placed on understanding the conceptual issues of CPTED. Lighting, use of blueprints, “good” and “bad” designs and other related issues. We will also discuss legislative issues involving CPTED and other practicalities, basic techniques for evaluating lighting...beyond the issues of what meets “code”, focusing on the somewhat subjective consideration of what is truly “adequate” lighting. Students should come prepared to spend time outside, regardless of the weather. At least part of our time will be spent exploring after dark. Topics to be covered: Intro to CPTED - What is CPTED? - Why CPTED? - What Works & What Doesn’t - Examples of Good and Bad Design - Lighting as a Components of CPTED - Defensible Space - Natural Surveillance, Territorial Reinforcement & Access Control - The 3 D’s (Design, Designation & Definition) - Psycho physiological Aspects - The “Broken Window Theory” & Its Relevance to CPTED - The Basics of Understanding Blueprints - Evaluating Architectural Plans for CPTED - Legislative Issues and CPTED.
