
The highlight of the President’s Banquet at the 2007 Annual Conference was the presentation of the Michael Blankenship Memorial Service Award to Hugh Bennett. The Blankenship Award, is OCPA’s highest honor, given annually to the crime prevention officer whose life and work reflects a commitment to the philosophy and mission of the Ohio Crime Prevention Association.
Hugh Bennett retired as a sergeant from the Akron Police Department after 32 years of service. While with the Akron Police Department, Hugh supervised crime prevention activities for 20 years and assisted in founding the Ohio Crime Prevention Association. Hugh is a Past President of the Ohio Crime Prevention Association, and currently serves as President’s Council Liaison on the OCPA Board of Directors.
Hugh received his Bachelors Degree in Law Enforcement Administration and a Masters Degree in Public Administration from Kent State University. He has been an Adjunct Instructor in the Department of Criminal Justice and currently teaches graduate courses on labor relations and public personnel administration in the Public Administration Program at Kent State University. Hugh re-retired from the Fraternal Order of Police Ohio Labor Council in 2004, after 10 years of service, although he continues to work part time negotiating contracts for two police departments.
The Blankenship Award is named for OSU Police Officer Michael Blankenship, who was killed in the line of duty 10 years ago. Officer Blankenship was an active member of OCPA and served as chair of the planning committee for OCPA’s 20th anniversary training conference. A 15-year veteran in law enforcement, Mike was a dedicated teacher, advisor and crime prevention officer. The Blankenship award is given to the person who most exemplifies Mike’s dedication to crime prevention and serving the community.
