OCPA Volunteer of the Year

Ken Moon, Forest Park Block Watch

Ken Moon has been active in the Forest Park community for more than thirty years.

Mr. Moon currently serves as Vice President for the Forest Park Block Watch.  As Vice President, Mr. Moon has volunteered to participate in numerous Law Enforcement Expos, often volunteering his Saturdays to hand out pamphlets or answer questions from potential block watch members.  Mr. Moon participated in neighborhood surveys sponsored by the Police Department, which were aimed at addressing quality of life issues.  Mr. Moon volunteers each year to assist officers with the city’s National Night Out.  He often staffs a Block Watch booth, passing out materials and recruiting new members to Block Watch.  Ken Moon has also volunteered to assist the Forest Park Police with the Halloween initiative.  Each year officers and block watch members ride through the neighborhood passing out Halloween candy.

Ken Moon attended the Forest Park Citizen’s Police Academy and is a proud member of the Forest Park Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association and attends monthly meetings and presentations to further assist residents in understanding the functions of the police department.

Last year, Ken volunteered more than eighty hours of his time to assist the Forest Park Police Department in the interview and hiring process for six new police officers and two dispatchers.  Ken and other community residents were also instrumental in establishing a Political Action committee and convincing council to put a tax amendment on the ballot, which would pay for the hiring of five new police officers.  Forest Park Block Watch assisted the PAC with the printing of yard signs and flyers endorsing the tax amendment and supporting the police department.  On February 6, 2007, the tax amendment passed by a two to one margin.

In January of this year, Ken received the Forest Park Police “Service Award” for his unselfish dedication to improving the quality of life for all residents of the City of Forest Park and his tireless support of the police department and its mission statement.  Ken Moon has a true passion for the city and demonstrates this through his interactions with residents, potential residents, the business community, council members and the police department.

Ken Moon is the OCPA Volunteer of the Year for 2006.
